Burn Permits
Burning permits focus attention on the safe use of fire. From October 15 through May 15, anyone starting an open-air fire within 500 feet of a forest, grassland, or woodland must by law secure a burning permit from the Division of Forestry.
When can I burn?
Open burning may be conducted only when authorized by a specific permit issued by the City of Mount Pleasant and approved in writing by the Mount Pleasant Fire Department.
Open burning must be conducted when ambient conditions are such that good dispersion of combustion products will result. As a general rule, open burning will not be permitted except between sunrise until one hour before sunset. This grant of exception shall in no way relieve the person responsible for such burning from the consequences, damages, injuries, or claims resulting from such burning.
What kind of materials can I burn?
All materials to be burned must be dry and in all other respects be in a state to sustain good combustion.
What kind of materials are prohibited?
Tires and other rubber products, vinyl shingles and siding, other plastics, asphalt shingles and other asphalt roofing materials, and/or asbestos containing materials.
What are the rules on burn piles?
The location of open burning shall not be less than 50 feet from any structure, and provision shall be made to prevent the fire from spreading to a structure. Or if the pile size is 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height it is acceptable to be 25 feet from a structure. If the fire is in an approved container than 15 feet from a structure is acceptable. IFC, 2018 307.4.1 Bonfires: that are not in a pit or container shall have a permit issued.
